Trial Conversion

Convert more free trials into paying customers

If you offer trials without requiring a credit card, some users will never add one. ChurnWard sends two friendly, well timed conversion emails that encourage trial users to add a payment method before they lose access.

What is trial conversion?

Many SaaS products let users start a free trial without entering a credit card. This removes friction at signup, but it also means a significant number of trial users will reach the end of their trial without ever providing payment details. Trial conversion emails solve this by sending two carefully timed reminders that encourage users to add a payment method while they still have access.

  • Two conversion emails: one at the midpoint of the trial and another one day before it ends
  • Only sent to trial users who have not provided a payment method
  • Customers who entered a card at signup are automatically excluded
  • Friendly and helpful tone, designed to convert rather than pressure
  • Complements dunning recovery, which protects customers who did add a card but whose payment later fails

Step by step

How it works

1

Trial detected without a payment method

When a customer starts a trial without providing a credit card, ChurnWard detects this via your processor's webhooks and enrols them in the conversion flow.

2

Midpoint email sent

Halfway through the trial, ChurnWard sends the first conversion email. It's friendly, helpful, and focused on the value the customer is already getting from your product. If the customer adds their payment details after this email, the flow cancels automatically and no further emails are sent.

3

Final reminder before trial ends

One day before the trial expires, a second email goes out. This gives the customer a clear deadline and a direct path to add their payment details and keep their access.

Why it matters

Convert trials without adding friction at signup

Keep your no-card-required signup flow. ChurnWard handles the conversion step later, when the customer has already experienced your product's value.

Friendly, not pushy

These emails are designed to help, not pressure. The goal is to remind trial users what they stand to lose and make it easy for them to act.

Only targets the right users

Customers who provided a payment method at signup are excluded. If someone adds their card after the first email, the flow cancels and the second email is never sent.

Frequently asked questions

The first email is sent at the midpoint of the trial. The second is sent one day before the trial expires. Both are automated and require no manual intervention.

Only trial users who have not provided a payment method. Customers who entered a credit card at signup are automatically excluded from the conversion flow.

Yes. You can edit the subject line, message body, and timing for both conversion emails. The default templates are designed to be friendly and conversion focused.

Trial conversion is currently supported with Stripe. Dodo Payments does not support the trial detection webhooks required for this flow.

The conversion flow cancels automatically. The second email is never sent and the customer will not receive any further conversion messages. ChurnWard detects the payment method being added via your processor's webhooks.

Dunning recovery targets active subscribers whose payment has failed. Trial conversion targets trial users who have never provided a payment method at all. They solve different problems and work best together.
