How Stripe compares to other processors
For standard US card payments, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. PayPal's current rate for online payments is 3.49% + $0.49, making it noticeably more expensive on both the percentage and fixed components. Square matches Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30 for online card transactions, though their in-person rate of 2.6% + $0.10 is lower if you process at a point of sale.
Paddle takes a different approach entirely. As a merchant of record, Paddle charges 5% + $0.50 per transaction but handles sales tax, VAT, and compliance on your behalf. That higher headline rate includes services you'd otherwise pay for separately.
Here's the thing: Stripe's base processing rate only tells part of the story. Each add-on service stacks its own fee on top. A SaaS business using Stripe Billing (+0.7%), Radar (+$0.05), and Tax (+0.5%) is actually paying closer to 4.1% + $0.35 per domestic card transaction. That narrows the gap with Paddle and other all-in-one platforms considerably.
Understanding Stripe's fee structure
Stripe's base processing fees depend on two things: where your business is located and where the card was issued. A US merchant pays 2.9% + $0.30 for domestic cards, while a UK merchant pays just 1.4% + 20p. The EU rate sits at 1.4% + €0.25.
Add-on services each layer their own charges. Billing adds 0.7% for subscription management. Invoicing adds 0.4% per invoice, capped at $2. Radar charges $0.05 per screened transaction. Tax adds 0.5% for automated tax calculation. These all stack on top of the base processing fee, so it's worth being selective about which ones you actually need.
International cards and currency conversion each add 1%, and they stack. A US merchant processing a European card in euros would pay an extra 2% on top of the domestic rate. That's 4.9% + $0.30 before any add-ons.
Dispute fees are $15 per dispute regardless of whether you win or lose. High dispute rates also risk pushing you into Stripe's monitoring programme, which adds further costs.
Reduce failed payments on Stripe
ChurnWard integrates with Stripe to recover failed payments automatically. Fewer failed charges means less revenue lost to fees.
